King Edward VI School Celebrates Unprecedented National Hockey Success
King Edward VI School is celebrating a landmark moment in its sporting history, with both the U13 girls and U15 boys qualifying for their respective National Outdoor Hockey Finals, an unprecedented achievement for the school.
The U13 girls earned their place after a dominant performance at the South Central In2Hockey tournament, remaining unbeaten throughout the competition and conceding just one goal all day. Their victory saw them crowned regional champions and secure a spot at the England Hockey National Finals in Nottingham.
At the finals, held last month, the girls showcased exceptional resilience and skill. After a narrow defeat in their opening game, they bounced back with two impressive wins to finish second in their group and progress to the third-place play-off against St Faith’s School from Cambridge. KES took an early lead, but their opponents levelled the match, sending it to a dramatic shuffle shootout. Holding their nerve, the KES girls triumphed 2–1 to secure the bronze medal—finishing third in the country and earning the school its first-ever national medal in girls’ hockey.
The squad: Charlii, Zia, Lucy, Daisy D, Lana, Alice, Rosie, Eliza, and Daisy S deserve huge congratulations for their outstanding achievement.
Their success follows the U15 boys’ qualification for the National Outdoor Finals, marking the first time in over a decade that a KES team has reached that stage in boys' hockey.
Director of Sport, Dan Kent, commented:
"To have both teams qualify for national finals in the same season is an incredible achievement and a testament to the hard work and dedication of our students and coaching staff. It’s a particularly special moment for girls' hockey at KES, as this is the first time in my tenure that we have reached the national stage outdoors and returning with a medal makes it even more special. We are immensely proud of both teams and look forward to seeing what they achieve next."
This remarkable success underlines the strength of KES’s hockey programme and the school’s commitment to excellence in sport.
