The school boasts outstanding facilities, including a Wellbeing Centre, modern library, new Sixth Form Centre, a 300-seat theatre and outstanding sports facilities. It is a fantastic place to work with a warm, supportive and happy atmosphere and highly qualified and dedicated staff. We aim to be a beacon of inclusivity, where every pupil and staff member is empowered to achieve their full potential. King Edward’s is committed to equality, diversity and inclusion in all areas of our community and encourages applications from all suitably qualified candidates.
We are seeking a well-qualified and dynamic Head of Cricket to join our thriving Sports Department on a full-time basis. You would be joining a large department delivering a region leading sports programme that is regularly gaining recognition at regional and in some cases national level.
Cricket is the flagship summer sport for both boys and girls offering a highly successful and ambitious programme which has been selected in the Cricketer Top 100 schools every year since 2021. We aim to consolidate and build on our position of strength within the region.
The role oversees 36 teams and over 20 coaching staff, with an excellent fixture list against leading day and boarding schools, alongside highlights such as the annual MCC match. The programme has a strong record of success with multiple teams regularly reaching outdoor county finals with our U13 and U15 girls having reached the county finals every year since its inception. Both girls’ indoor teams reached regional finals this year, and the U15 boys have reached regional finals day three times in the past five years. A comprehensive winter training programme runs for every age group throughout the spring term. Strong links with Hampshire County Cricket Club enrich the pathway, with several students progressing into the performance system. Our scholarship programme supports the individual performer and, since 2023, three of our students have signed professional contracts with various counties. Two of these students have gained recent international honours with one also being selected for The Hundred 2026 and one will be competing at the Women’s Works Cup 2026. An active touring schedule further enriches the programme, with recent tours to Sri Lanka and India for the senior squads and Jersey for the younger teams. Planning has just started for the next tour to Sri Lanka in Summer 2027.
The department promotes a range of sporting activity through its Physical Education and Games curriculum encouraging students to work to achieve their potential. In addition to a high level of cricket expertise, you would have a teaching timetable and the ability to teach across the full sporting range is essential whilst particular strength in one or more of rugby, hockey and netball would be an advantage. Academic PE is a popular subject at both GCSE and A Level and the ability to teach the subject at GCSE and/or A Level is preferable.
Teaching takes place within our excellent on-site facilities, including a sports complex with a good-sized sports hall, an all-weather surface, netball courts, rugby pitches, a cricket field with 4 outdoor nets and a newly installed fitness suite. In addition, the school owns an off-site facility of a very high quality. This has over 30 acres of playing fields with a water based astro turf, 4 netball courts, 6 rugby fields and can host up to 8 cricket matches at any one time.
King Edward’s runs an extensive Saturday fixture programme, and this is an important part of the overall sports programme. All newly appointed PE staff are expected to play a full part in this taking a Saturday team in each of the three terms. Our teams are very successful on a regional level and have also gained recognition in the latter stages of national competitions too.
The post would suit a strong cricket specialist looking to move into a programme leadership role or an experienced head of sport looking to build on an already strong programme. A willingness to contribute to the School’s wide range of co-curricular activities is expected. Small teaching groups throughout the School are supported by the very latest technology and modern facilities including an extensive use of 1:1 digital learning.
