Classical Civilisation
Classical Civilisation offers students the opportunity to study elements of the literature in translation and visual/material culture of the Greek and Roman world, and acquire an understanding of their social, historical and cultural contexts.
This course is ideal for all students who have an interest in the civilisation of Ancient Greece and Rome, whether or not they continue with their Latin Studies and is taught from Year 9.
This is a very diverse subject with something for everyone. The ancient world still informs the present and there will be plenty of discussion on comparison of values and lifestyles as well as appreciation of the influences on our own culture. There will be opportunities for research, project work and student presentations and students will develop a wide range of transferable skills, including assessment of ancient visual and written material and critical and evaluative writing. During the year there will also be a museum visit to the Roman Baths in Bath to support the topics studied.
Year 9
In Year 9, students will study the following topics:
Term 1: The Minoans
Term 2: Roman Leisure & Entertainment
Term 3: Virgil’s Aeneid
Year 10
In Year 10, students will study Greek and Roman Myth & Religion.
Year 11
In Year 11, students will study the Homeric World and read part of the Odyssey in translation.
