Willkommen! Welcome to the German Department! Immer vorwärts!

The German Department aims to provide a supportive, carefully structured and well-resourced learning environment for all students from the First to the Upper Sixth Year.

German is taught by a highly experienced, enthusiastic team who convey their passion for the language. The foreign language is regularly used as the means of instruction and communication, as we place great emphasis on developing effective communication skills in the foreign language.

Enrichment Opportunities

Trips

Trips and further language activities are a vital part of the co-curricular life of the Department, with trips to Germany for Lower School and Upper School students. Berlin – beginning of Easter holidays which includes city sightseeing, a River Spree boat trip and a day trip to historic Potsdam.

Other opportunities

We are lucky to welcome the theatre production company Onatti each year, who perform a play completely in German, much to the students’ delight. We also run numerous events and competitions throughout the year to give all students the opportunity to experience the German language and culture in fun ways - some examples of these are language days in collaboration with Southampton University and creative writing competitions for different year groups. Our recent successes include one of our U6 students winning a national writing competition!
