Design Technology

The Design and Technology Department at King Edward's is a vibrant and inspiring place in which to work. The department is a modern well-resourced centre for excellence in design and technology within which students are encouraged to participate.

The atmosphere is one of busy and purposeful activity where pupils are encouraged to be creative and to expand their experience and knowledge. The department is a modern well-resourced centre for excellence in design and technology within which students are encouraged to participate.

The department comprises; two multi-material workshops, a dedicated textiles room, an IT based “clean” room and staffing and materials preparation rooms. The Department is well equipped with a wide variety of materials, machinery and processes available. There is full technical support from the department technician for both staff and students.

Year 7

In Year 7, students work with an exciting range of materials in Year 7, including, metals, timbers, textiles and papers and boards.

Year 8

In Year 8, students build on last year’s skills students are introduced to computer aided design programmes, use CNC equipment and develop more advanced manufacturing skills.

Year 9

In Year 9, students who choose to study Design and Technology in Year 9, complete projects in electronics, timbers and textiles as well as start to learn some of the course theory in preparation for GCSE.

Year 10 & Year 11

At GCSE students will study OCR Design and Technology. Students can choose to specialise in three in-depth areas: Graphics, Resistant Materials or Textiles. Alongside these areas all students learn core materials information and Design Engineering principles. The GCSE course also contains mathematical content. The course structure in 50% on a non-examined coursework project and 50% an examination.

Trips

  • During the GCSE course students will visit design companies relevant to their specialist materials area.
