Physical Education

If you love playing sport and enjoy learning how your body works for sport…this is the course for you! 

Studying Physical Education at A Level will give you a fantastic insight into the amazing world of sports performance. Not only will you have the chance to perform or coach a sport through the non-examined assessment component, you will also develop a wide range of knowledge into the how and why of physical activity and sport.

The combination of physical performance and academic challenge provides an exciting opportunity for students. You can perform, and then through the academic study improve your performance or coaching though application of the theory. Physical Education is studied through a range of different contexts and the impact it has on both ours and others everyday lives. You will learn the reasons why we do things, why some people out perform others, mentally and physically. You will also delve into the ethical considerations behind the use of drugs and also the influence that modern technology is having in and on physical activity and sport. 

Entry Requirements

Grade 6 in Physical Education if studied at GCSE.

You don’t necessarily need to have studied GCSE Physical Education or Sports Science to study this subject at A Level, however it is an advantage. Solid foundations in Biology would also be advantageous. 30% of the course is assessed through practical skills and therefore students will need to perform at a decent level in one sport that is on the AQA specification. 

Topics Covered

Over the two year course, students will study the following:

• Applied Anatomy and Physiology
• Skill Acquisition
• Sport and Society
• Exercise Physiology
• Biomechanical movement
• Sport Psychology
• Sport and Society and the role of Technology in sport.

Methods of Assessment

Paper 1 - Factors affecting participating in physical activity and sport  

2 hours - 35% of A Level  

 

Paper 2 - Factors affecting optimal performance in physical activity and sport    

2 hours - 35% of A Level 

 

Assessment 3 - Practical performance in physical activity and sport. 

30% of A Level 

Internally assessed and externally moderated. This section of the course contributes to 30% of the A Level. Students will be assessed as a performer or coach in the full sided version of one activity and then will be assessed in an analysis and evaluation coursework. 

Enrichment Opportunities

The department will be running historical national stadium tours and sport science physiology laboratory workshops at local Universities.
