Extended Studies | Senior School

Extended Studies

Our Extended Studies programme supports learning across the academic curriculum, as well as a host to key PSHE aspects.

Extended Studies is operated as a carousel programme, consisting of six units.

  • Food & Health
  • Equality & Diversity
  • Foundations of Philosophical Thought
  • Dance
  • Relationships

The aim of the Extended Studies Programme is to enrich the learning experience of the pupils, complementing their academic endeavours and aspects of PSHE. Through a rich array of learning styles and challenges pupils are encouraged to  build upon their curiosity, resilience, problem solving skills, empathy and social interactions, all with the intention of creating well rounded, confident, thoughtful and independent young adults.

Each unit spans four weeks in duration and is tutor group based. We also team up with our Digital Leaders (fellow peers) who lead an Internet Safety Programme with various workshops to inform pupils of good practice online.

Throughout the Academic Year we also expose pupils to cultural delights such as Shakespeare with the talented troop from, 'The Young Shakespeare Company,' who run a workshop and performance, for example, Midsummer Night's Dream, Romeo and Juliette or Macbeth. This past Academic Year we have be fortunate to have a virtual visit from Maz Evans, author of the series, 'Who Let The Gods Out?' This consisted of a reading by Maz Evans, a question and answer session and advice about writing. Matt Dickinson also hosted a fascinating virtual session based upon his 'Everest Trilogy,' engaging pupils in the history, geography, adventures, perils, achievements and experiences of his Mount Everest climbs. Sonia Leong presented a superb workshop looking at the stylistic traits of Manga art and her illustrations of Shakespeare texts through the Manga medium. We host an Inter Form Athletics Meet held at the local Southampton Athletics Track, co-ordinated in association with the P.E. Department to facilitate an inclusive, friendly and competitive sporting occasion.

Head of Department, Mrs Moxon, shares more information Extended Studies at King Edward VI School.

Food & Health

The Food and Health unit consists of:

  • Healthy eating, with the chance to undertake some cookery (pizza making) and food tasting such as sushi, world cheeses or healthy smoothies
  • First Aid content is delivered by our School Nurse addressing key procedures such as CPR, Choking, Epi pens, cuts and what to do in an emergency.
  • 'I Help Myself' programme delivered by the School Counsellor; this is ever important as we strive to equip pupils with techniques to balance life, learning, pressures and stresses of life.

Lego Masters

This unit exposes pupils to the principles of teamwork and an understanding of one another’s strengths to facilitate the most efficient working team drawing upon creativity, resourcefulness, adaptability, enforced setbacks which to think and work around.

Foundations of Philosophical Thought

The Foundations in Philosophical Thought unit continues to stretch pupils’ minds and perceptions of the real and unreal, playing with philosophical ideas and theories such as Plato. Pupils’ tolerance and awareness of cultural variations is also fostered and draws upon the positive aspects of local and wider communities, faiths and people. Pupils will explore psychology through scientific experiments challenging their senses and analysing their responses.

Dance

An upbeat and dynamic unit drawing upon pupils’ creativity and cultural awareness of varying dance styles.

Communication & Culture

This unit encourages a growing confidence in regard to independence, teamwork, resilience, engagement and rationale of the individual and their place in the wider School community.

Outdoor Learning

This unit will introduce pupils to core orienteering skills that will enable them to undertake basic navigational tasks at Wellington. Pupils will also be exposed to a range of Forest Skills, hosted at Stroud.

Enrichment Opportunities

Clubs and Societies

Enrichment comes in many forms from cultural enlightenment with visiting authors and illustrators engaging directly with the pupils and answering questions to encourage, engage and promote reading.

  • Dance: dance instructors cover a range of dance styles from ballroom to the choreography of musical dance.
  • Drama: theatre troops visit to complement literary links such as the Young Shakespeare Company and Quirky Bird, who promote creative writing alongside performance.
  • First Aid: pupils are given basic First Aid instruction from a qualified medical professional giving basic coping strategies and techniques in an emergency.
  • Well-being: guidance is provided by the School Counsellor, whereupon exercises and tools are explored which to employ in a host of situations in life and learning to enable pupils to manage situations calmly and sensibly, for a well balanced and considered address.
  • Cookery: pupils all experience some cooking instruction and obviously get to taste their efforts afterwards!
  • Athletics: Year 7 have an Inter-form Athletics Meet in the Summer Term providing the perfect opportunity to work as teams being inclusive of all members of the Tutor Group to rally together for their form.
